The Rest You Need
... Come to Christ today and rest in what He has done. Trust His promises, obey His voice, and let your anxious heart discover that Jesus Himself is the greater rest your soul has been searching for.
Hebrews 4:9-10 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
Devotion:
Rest is something everyone wants, yet surprisingly few possess. You can take a day off, go on vacation, turn off your phone, and still have a heart that refuses to be quiet. Physical rest is important, but Hebrews points us toward something far greater—the rest found in Jesus Christ.
Israel learned this lesson the hard way. God delivered His people from slavery in Egypt and promised to bring them into a land of rest. Yet an entire generation failed to enjoy what God had prepared because unbelief produced disobedience. They had heard God’s promise, but they did not respond to it with faith.
There is a warning here for us. It is possible to hear God’s Word, know His promises, and still live as though everything depends upon us. Unbelief keeps striving, worrying, controlling, and carrying burdens God never intended us to carry alone.
Jesus offers something better.
He said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗). Notice where that rest is found. Jesus did not point to a place, a schedule, or better circumstances. He said, “Come to Me.”
The deepest rest of the soul is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of Christ. When you belong to Him, you can face an uncertain tomorrow knowing that your life is held securely in His hands. Your sins have been forgiven. Your eternity is settled. Your burdens can be brought to Him. You no longer have to earn what Jesus has already accomplished for you.
God also knows our physical limitations. He established a pattern of work and rest because we were never designed to run endlessly. There are times when the most obedient thing you can do is stop, be still, and remember that God remains God even when you are not working.
But even the best night’s sleep cannot satisfy a restless soul. Only Christ can do that.
So what are you carrying today? Fear about tomorrow? Regret from yesterday? Pressure to keep everything together? Bring it to Jesus. Believe His Word and refuse to let unbelief rob you of what He has promised.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that we can come to You when we are weary and burdened, and find rest for our souls. Help us to trust You with our worries, fears, and burdens rather than trying to carry them ourselves. Teach us to walk closely with You and find our peace in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
