God Gives a New Heart

... The God who cleanses us from sin also gives us a new heart so that we may walk faithfully with Him.

Ezekiel 36:26 (NKJV)

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Devotion:

This passage reveals that true spiritual restoration begins with what God does within us.

Ezekiel spoke to a people who had experienced the consequences of rebellion against God. Israel had profaned His name through idolatry and disobedience, and judgment had followed. Yet God declared that He would gather, cleanse, and restore His people. Their restoration would not be based on their worthiness, but on the faithfulness and holiness of God.

At the center of this promise is something deeper than returning to a land or rebuilding ruined places. God promised to give His people a new heart. Their greatest problem was not merely their circumstances. It was the condition of their hearts.

That same truth applies to us. We may try to change our behavior, improve our circumstances, or correct outward failures, but only God can transform the heart. Sin hardens us toward Him, and no amount of human effort can produce the spiritual life we need.

This is why the grace of God is so precious. Through Jesus Christ, God does for sinners what they cannot do for themselves. He forgives, cleanses, and gives new life to those who come to Christ by faith. The Christian life is not an attempt to make an old heart behave better. It is the life that flows from God’s gracious work within us through His Spirit.

And because salvation begins with God’s grace, our continued walk with Him must depend upon that same grace. We obey not to earn His favor, but because He has mercifully made us His own.

Consider today whether you are depending upon outward effort or upon the transforming work of God within your heart.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for Your mercy and for the new life You give through Jesus Christ. Continue to soften my heart, shape my desires, and teach me to walk faithfully in obedience to You. Amen.
