Power to Be His Witness
... God calls us to be His witnesses and supplies His Spirit as our strength
Acts 1:8 NKJV (devotion translation)
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me ...
Devotion:
Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His disciples a clear charge: they were to be His witnesses in the world. This calling was not limited to a select few, but extended to all who would follow Him. Yet Jesus did not leave them to fulfill this mission in their own strength. He made it clear that the ability to live faithfully and speak boldly would come only through the power of the Holy Spirit.
This promise reveals something essential about the Christian life. God does not merely call us to obedience; He provides the means to walk in it. The word “power” points to divine enablement - strength that does not originate within us, but is given by God Himself. Left to ourselves, we may struggle with fear, weakness, or inconsistency. But through the Spirit, God works within us to strengthen our faith, guide our steps, and give us courage to testify of Christ.
The disciples were instructed to wait for this power before stepping into their mission. This teaches us dependence. The work of God cannot be accomplished by human effort alone. It requires a life yielded to the Spirit, attentive to His leading, and reliant on His strength.
This same promise remains for believers today. The Spirit who empowered the early church continues to dwell within and come upon God’s people, enabling them to live in a way that reflects Christ. As we seek Him, trust His Word, and walk in obedience, we become vessels through which His power is made known.
The Christian life is not sustained by effort alone, but by the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit within us.
Prayer:
Lord, fill me with Your Spirit and enable me to live and speak as Your faithful witness. Amen.
