Present With the Lord
... Those who trust in Christ are already present with Him beyond this life
2 Corinthians 5:8 NKJV (devotion translation)
We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
Devotion:
The Bible speaks with clarity about what happens to those who belong to Christ after death. Paul writes with confidence that to leave this earthly body is to be immediately present with the Lord. This assures us that heaven is not an empty or distant promise, but a present reality where redeemed souls dwell with God even now.
This truth rests entirely on a person’s relationship with Jesus Christ. Salvation is not inherited by heritage or secured by association with a particular group. God, in His sovereign plan, chose the Jewish people as the instrument through whom He would reveal Himself and bring forth the Messiah. Through them came the fulfillment of God’s redemptive promise in Christ, offered to the whole world.
Yet Scripture consistently teaches that being chosen for a purpose is not the same as receiving salvation. Like all people, both Jew and Gentile must personally respond to Jesus as Savior. Eternal life is given not on the basis of ethnicity, but through faith in Him. Those who receive Christ are forgiven, reconciled to God, and assured of eternal presence with Him.
Therefore, there are indeed people in heaven right now—those who trusted in Christ during their earthly lives. They are alive in His presence, fully known and fully at peace. This reality reminds us that eternity is not merely future; it has already begun for those who are in Christ.
This truth calls us to examine our own hearts. The question is not about others, but about whether we have personally placed our trust in Jesus. Heaven is certain, but only through Him.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to trust fully in Christ alone for salvation and to live with the assurance of Your eternal presence. Amen.
