Return to Your First Love
... God’s faithfulness invites us to return, not remain distant
1 Samuel 12:22 NKJV (devotion translation)
For the Lord will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you His people.
Devotion:
In Israel’s transition from God as King to an earthly monarchy, the people revealed a deeper issue of the heart - they had drifted from trust in the Lord. Yet even in their misplaced desires, God remained faithful. Through the prophet Samuel, the people were reminded of their history: again and again, God delivered, provided, and restored. Their story was not sustained by human leadership, but by the steadfast mercy of God.
One of the most meaningful moments in this passage is the return to Gilgal - a place marked by remembrance. It was where God’s people first entered the Promised Land, renewed covenant, and worshiped Him. By returning there, they were called back to the simplicity and clarity of their early devotion.
This reveals an enduring truth: spiritual drift often happens gradually, but restoration begins intentionally. God does not abandon His people when they wander; instead, He calls them back. His faithfulness is rooted not in our consistency, but in His character. “For His great name’s sake,” He remains committed to those He has made His own.
At times, the Christian life can become burdened with distraction, routine, or compromise. The heart grows distant not through rejection, but neglect. Yet the remedy is not complicated. It is a return - a deliberate turning back to the Lord, to remember His mercy, His works, and His presence.
God’s call is not merely to correct behavior, but to restore relationship. He invites His people to serve Him with all their heart, not out of obligation, but out of renewed love. And even when conviction comes, it is accompanied by grace. The same God who warns also welcomes.
To return to your “Gilgal” is to remember where God first met you - and to meet Him there again, with a willing heart.
Prayer:
Lord, bring my heart back to You and renew in me a steady devotion that rests in Your faithfulness. Amen.
