When God Says No
... True faith listens to God not only for affirmation, but for direction and restraint
Luke 22:42 NKJV (devotion translation)
Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.
Devotion:
There is a natural tendency within us to seek affirmation rather than correction, to desire God’s approval of our plans rather than His direction over them. Yet Scripture shows that faithful obedience is not measured by how often we hear “yes,” but by our willingness to submit when God says “no.”
In the life of Israel’s king, we see a man who surrounded himself with voices that confirmed what he wanted to hear, while resisting the one voice that spoke truth (1 Kings 22:6-8). This reveals something about the human heart: we can become selective listeners, attentive to comfort but resistant to conviction.
God, however, speaks for our good, not merely for our agreement. His “no” is not a denial of care but an expression of wisdom. Because He sees what we cannot, He often restrains what we would otherwise pursue. To ignore His voice or to avoid it altogether is to place our desires above His authority.
Jesus Himself demonstrated perfect submission in the garden. Though He understood the suffering before Him, He yielded fully to the Father’s will. This is the pattern for every believer—not reluctant obedience, but trusting surrender.
To walk faithfully with God requires a heart that is open to His word in every form—encouragement, correction, permission, and restraint. It means we do not measure His goodness by the answers we prefer, but by His unchanging character.
When we learn to receive both His “yes” and His “no” with humility, we grow in discernment and maturity. We begin to trust not our impulses, but His wisdom. And in that place, obedience becomes not a burden, but a mark of genuine faith.
Prayer:
Lord, give me a heart that trusts Your will fully and obeys Your voice, whether You say yes or no. Amen.
Digging Deeper:
- Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trusting the Lord over our own understanding aligns with surrendering to His will, even when He says “no.”
- Isaiah 55:8-9 – God’s ways being higher explains why His restraint is often necessary and wise.
- Hebrews 5:8 – Jesus learning obedience through suffering reflects His submission in the garden.
- James 1:19-20 – Being quick to hear and receptive challenges selective listening to only what we want.
- Psalm 32:8-9 – God’s guidance includes instruction and restraint, not stubborn self-direction.
- Romans 12:2 – Renewed minds help us discern God’s will rather than follow personal impulses.
- John 14:15 – Obedience as an expression of love reinforces that submission is not burdensome but relational.
