Devotion:

Jesus’ command to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit reveals a foundational truth about the nature of God. Scripture consistently presents God as one in essence, yet revealed in three distinct Persons. This is not a contradiction, but a divine mystery made known through the life and teaching of Christ.

In this verse, Jesus does not speak of “names,” but “name”—singular—pointing to the unity of God. Yet He clearly identifies the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism, therefore, is more than a symbolic act; it is a declaration of faith in the fullness of who God is as He has revealed Himself.

To be baptized in this name is to be brought into relationship with the triune God. The Father, who plans redemption; the Son, who accomplishes it through His sacrifice; and the Holy Spirit, who applies it to our hearts—each Person working in perfect unity for our salvation.

This also guards the truth about Jesus Himself. To rightly understand the Trinity is to affirm the full deity of Christ, not reducing Him to merely a role or expression, but recognizing Him as the eternal Son of God.

For the believer, this means our faith is rooted in the fullness of God’s revelation, not shaped by preference or tradition, but by what Scripture clearly teaches. Baptism, then, becomes an act of obedience and a testimony that we belong to the God who has made Himself known as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to trust and follow Your Word, and to know You as You have revealed Yourself in truth. Amen.
