Truth Above Approval

... The fear of God steadies the heart where the fear of man leads it astray

Galatians 1:10 ESV (devotion translation)

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Devotion:

When Jesus stood before the Roman governor, the verdict was clear: there was no fault in Him. Yet despite this certainty, the final decision did not follow truth—it followed pressure. The voices of the crowd, the tension of political consequence, and the desire to maintain approval all competed against what was known to be right. In the end, truth was acknowledged but not upheld.

This moment reveals something deeper about the human heart. It is possible to recognize truth and still resist it when the cost feels too high. The fear of man can quietly outweigh the fear of God. It shifts our focus from obedience to acceptance, from conviction to compromise.

Jesus, however, speaks of a kingdom not of this world—a kingdom rooted in truth. Those who belong to Him are called to hear His voice and respond to it, not selectively, but faithfully. God’s character is unchanging, and His truth does not bend under pressure. He is just, holy, and worthy of our full allegiance.

The challenge for every believer is not simply to know what is right, but to stand in it. Decisions shaped by the approval of others will eventually lead away from God’s will. But a life anchored in reverence for God brings clarity and steadiness, even when the surrounding voices grow louder.

To follow Christ is to choose truth over acceptance, even when that choice is costly. In doing so, we entrust the outcome to God, knowing that His purposes are greater than human approval.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to seek Your truth above all and to live in a way that pleases You rather than man; strengthen my heart to walk faithfully in Your will. Amen.
