An Undivided Heart
... True devotion to Christ is revealed when the heart, the words, and the life increasingly agree.
Mark 7:6-7 (NIV) ⓘ ↗These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.
Devotion:
These words call us to consider whether our outward profession of faith reflects the true condition of our hearts.
When Jesus confronted the religious leaders, He exposed something more serious than improper religious practice. They were careful about outward observance, but their hearts were distant from God. Human traditions had become more important to them than genuine obedience to the Lord. Their problem was hypocrisy, an inconsistency between what they professed and what was actually true within them.
This warning is not merely for the Pharisees. Every believer should allow Scripture to examine the heart. It is possible to know Christian language, attend worship, serve faithfully, and still permit areas of life to remain surrendered more to habit, reputation, or self-interest than to Christ. God is not satisfied with outward conformity while the heart remains distant from Him.
Yet the answer to hypocrisy is not pretending to be better. It is honest repentance. Peter himself demonstrated painful inconsistency when fear caused him to withdraw from Gentile believers, despite having learned that God shows no partiality. His failure reminds us that even sincere believers can stumble into hypocrisy. But failure does not place us beyond God’s grace. Christ calls us to confess our sin, receive His forgiveness, and return to faithful obedience.
We should therefore examine ourselves before becoming occupied with the faults of others. Jesus teaches us to address the plank in our own eye before attempting to remove the speck from another’s. This produces humility rather than self-righteousness and allows correction to come from love rather than pride.
God desires more than words from His people. He desires hearts wholly devoted to Him, lives in which private conduct increasingly agrees with public confession.
Ask the Lord to reveal where your words and your walk do not agree, and surrender those places to Him with an undivided heart.
Prayer:
Lord, search my heart and reveal every place where my life does not agree with my profession of faith. Forgive me, cleanse me, and teach me to walk sincerely and faithfully before You. Amen.
