Bearing His Name

Jeremiah 15:16 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗

Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.

Devotion:

Jeremiah understood something every Christian needs to remember: belonging to God is more than carrying a label. It is an identity. Wherever Jeremiah went, whatever he said, and however he lived, he knew that he bore the name of the Lord.

The same is true for you and me. If Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, you bear His name. The word Christian identifies you with Christ. That means your words, attitudes, decisions, relationships, and conduct are continually giving people some impression of the One you claim to follow.

Jeremiah tells us where such a life begins: “Your words were found, and I ate them.” God’s Word was not merely information to him. It was nourishment. It entered his heart, shaped his thinking, corrected his course, and became his delight.

We cannot represent Christ well while neglecting the Scriptures. How will we know what pleases God if we do not listen to what He has said? How can we reflect His heart while allowing the world to shape our values? The believer must be fed by, guided by, and governed by the Word of God.

And that means we cannot practice selective obedience. It is easy to obey the passages that agree with us. The real test comes when Scripture confronts our desires, exposes our sin, or calls us to a different path than everyone around us is taking. Jesus said, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word” (John 14:23 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗).

Sometimes obedience will even leave you standing alone. Jeremiah said (NIV) ⓘ ↗, “I sat alone because Your hand was upon me.” Following Christ will not always make you popular. There will be moments when your convictions separate you from what others accept. But never confuse being separated unto God with being abandoned by God. His hand is still upon you.

And when you fail to represent Him well, do not run from Him. God told Jeremiah, “If you return, then I will bring you back; you shall stand before Me” (Jeremiah 15:19 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗). Our God restores repentant people. Conviction is an invitation to turn, confess, receive His mercy, and walk forward again in obedience.

Believer, you bear the name of Jesus today. Ask yourself: What are others learning about Christ through my life? Feed upon His Word, refuse compromise, repent quickly, and live so that those around you receive a clear glimpse of the Savior you love. His grace will strengthen you, His Word will guide you, and His presence will keep you faithful.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for calling me to belong to You. Help me to treasure Your Word, obey You faithfully, and represent Christ well in all that I say and do. When I fail, lead me quickly to repentance, and by Your grace strengthen me to walk faithfully in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
