Devotion:

Today's Scripture reminds us that God calls His people to pursue peace, even when peace is not always returned.

David's return to Jerusalem after Absalom's rebellion was marked by continued conflict. Instead of enjoying a season of rest, he immediately faced opposition from those who resisted reconciliation and sought further division. Scripture reminds us that not every heart is willing to be healed. Some people remain committed to bitterness, rebellion, or personal agendas despite sincere efforts toward peace.

This reality can be discouraging. We often desire restored relationships within our families, churches, or friendships. Yet the Bible teaches that reconciliation requires humility on both sides. While believers are commanded to forgive, seek peace, and extend grace, we cannot force another person to respond in the same way.

David continued forward in his God-given responsibilities even when others refused peace. In the same way, Christians are called to obey the Lord regardless of another person's response. We must examine our own hearts, making certain that bitterness, pride, or vengeance do not take root within us. Joab's actions serve as a sober warning that unresolved resentment can lead to destructive choices and great harm.

The Lord never asks us to carry bitterness. Through Jesus Christ, we have received mercy far greater than we deserved. Because Christ reconciled us to God through His cross, we are empowered to pursue reconciliation with others whenever possible. When reconciliation is rejected, we entrust those situations to the Lord, knowing that He alone can change hearts.

Faithfulness before God does not mean every relationship will be restored. It means we have walked in obedience, extended grace, and left the outcome in His hands.

Prayer:

Father, help me pursue peace with humility and sincerity. Guard my heart from bitterness and teach me to entrust unresolved relationships to You. Thank You for reconciling me to Yourself through Jesus Christ. Amen.
