A Temple for His Presence
... God’s desire has always been to dwell among His people.
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV (devotion translation)
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
Devotion:
Today’s Scripture reminds us that God’s desire has always been to dwell among His people.
When Solomon began building the temple, he was carrying out an assignment that had been entrusted to him by God. The work required wisdom, careful preparation, and faithful obedience. Every stone, every beam, and every detail pointed to the holiness of the Lord. The temple was not simply an impressive structure. It was to be the place where God’s presence would dwell among His covenant people.
Yet the New Testament reveals an even greater truth. Through faith in Jesus Christ, God no longer dwells in a building made by human hands. He chooses to dwell within every believer by His Holy Spirit. This does not diminish the significance of Solomon’s temple. Rather, it fulfills what the temple anticipated. God’s presence is now personal, and His people are called to reflect His holiness wherever they live and serve.
The Lord’s promise to Solomon also reminds us that while God’s love is steadfast, His blessings are closely connected to a life of obedience. Walking in His ways does not earn His love, but it does position us to enjoy the fellowship, peace, and fruit that come from living according to His Word. As we submit ourselves to Christ each day, He continues His work of shaping us into a dwelling that honors Him.
Take time today to remember that your life belongs to the Lord. Since His Spirit lives within you, seek to honor Him in your thoughts, your words, and your actions. A heart surrendered to Christ is the place where His presence is displayed most clearly.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for making Your dwelling place within those who trust in Jesus Christ. Help me walk in faithful obedience so that my life reflects Your holiness and brings glory to Your name. Amen.
