Ask for Wisdom First
... May your first response in every important decision be to seek the wisdom that comes from God before relying on your own understanding.
James 1:5 NKJV (devotion translation)
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Devotion:
Today’s Scripture reminds us that God delights to give wisdom to those who humbly seek Him.
When Solomon became king, he faced responsibilities that far exceeded his experience. Rather than asking God for wealth, power, or a long life, he confessed his need and asked for wisdom to lead God’s people faithfully. His request revealed a heart that recognized dependence upon the Lord instead of confidence in himself. God honored that humility by granting Solomon exceptional wisdom and, in His generosity, added blessings Solomon had not requested.
The beginning of Solomon’s reign also reminds us that small compromises can become dangerous if they are left unchecked. Even while seeking God, Solomon made decisions that seemed politically wise but were spiritually unwise. Those early choices eventually led him away from wholehearted devotion. Wisdom is not merely knowing what is right. It is faithfully applying God’s truth in the decisions we make each day.
The challenges we face may differ from Solomon’s, but our need is the same. We need heavenly wisdom to navigate family responsibilities, work, relationships, and every circumstance that calls for discernment. Human knowledge has its place, but God’s wisdom enables us to see situations through the light of His Word and respond in ways that honor Him. He invites His children to ask, trusting that He gives generously to those who seek Him with sincere hearts.
As we walk with Christ, true wisdom grows through reverence for God, obedience to His Word, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. The Lord is faithful to guide those who desire to please Him more than themselves.
May your first response in every important decision be to seek the wisdom that comes from God before relying on your own understanding.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for inviting me to seek Your wisdom. Guard me from small compromises and teach me to walk in obedience to Your Word. Help me depend on You in every decision and reflect the character of Christ in my life. Amen.
