Growing Together in Christ
... The grace we have received from Christ should shape the grace we extend within our marriage.
Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Devotion:
Marriage brings two different people together, and those differences often become most apparent when there is disagreement. Scripture does not teach us that a healthy marriage will never experience conflict. Instead, it teaches believers how to respond to one another when conflict comes.
Our natural tendency is to defend ourselves, rehearse past offenses, or insist that the other person understand our perspective. But Christ calls us to something different. Kindness, tenderness, and forgiveness are not merely good communication techniques. They are expressions of the grace we have already received from God.
This is especially important in marriage. A husband and wife will sometimes hear things differently, process difficulties differently, and need different amounts of time before they are ready to talk. Those differences do not necessarily mean that one person is right and the other is wrong. They remind us that marriage requires patience, humility, prayer, and a willingness to listen.
The deepest foundation for forgiveness is not the worthiness of our spouse. Paul points us back to Christ: we forgive because God has forgiven us in Christ. The gospel becomes the pattern for how we treat one another.
This does not mean ignoring sin or pretending that painful words do not matter. Some wounds require honest conversation, repentance, forgiveness, and time for trust to be restored. But believers do not have to approach those difficulties in the strength of the flesh. We can bring them before the Lord and ask Him to soften our hearts, govern our words, and help us pursue reconciliation. This central emphasis is reflected throughout the marriage discussion in the provided material.
A strong marriage is not built by two flawless people, but by two people continually submitting themselves to the lordship and grace of Jesus Christ.
Prayer:
Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to extend to others the grace You have shown me. Guard my words, humble my heart, and help me pursue forgiveness and reconciliation according to Your Word. Amen.
