The Lord Who Hears
... The Lord of hosts rules in strength and listens with tenderness
1 Samuel 1:11 NKJV (devotion translation)
O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me… but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life.
Devotion:
The opening chapter of 1 Samuel introduces us to a painful season in the life of Hannah. She was loved by her husband, yet burdened by barrenness. In a culture where children were seen as a sign of blessing, her empty arms became a source of deep sorrow. Scripture tells us plainly that the Lord had closed her womb. This was not random. God is the author of life, and nothing in Hannah’s story was outside His sovereign hand.
What makes this account remarkable is not merely her anguish, but where she carried it. She went to the house of the Lord. Year after year, through provocation and tears, she placed herself in the presence of God. And there, in bitterness of soul, she prayed.
Notice how she addresses Him: “O Lord of hosts.” This is a title of strength and authority—the Commander of heavenly armies. Yet the God who rules over angelic hosts also bends low to hear one grieving woman. Hannah’s prayer reveals a heart surrendered to God’s purposes. She did not simply ask for relief; she promised that if God granted her a son, she would dedicate him back to the Lord.
In time, God would answer. But even before the answer came, her countenance changed. Peace replaced despair. Why? Because she entrusted her pain to the Lord who hears.
There are seasons when God’s purposes are hidden from us. We may not understand why He allows certain hardships. But Hannah’s story reminds us that the Lord of hosts is also the Lord who listens. He works not only through our blessings, but through our waiting.
Bring your sorrow honestly before Him. Trust His timing. The God who governs nations also governs your life with wisdom and care.
Prayer:
Lord of hosts, help me to trust Your sovereign hand and to pour out my heart before You with confidence that You hear. Amen.
