Mercies New Every Morning
... God faithfully extends mercy to those who turn to Him through Jesus Christ.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV) ⓘ ↗Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.
Devotion:
These words remind us that God’s faithfulness remains sure even when the consequences of sin are painfully clear.
Lamentations was written in the shadow of Jerusalem’s destruction. The city had suffered greatly because the people repeatedly rejected God’s warnings and continued in rebellion. Jeremiah did not minimize their sin or its consequences. He grieved over what disobedience had produced.
Yet in the very center of that sorrow, Jeremiah turned his attention to the character of God.
God had not changed. His mercy had not disappeared. His compassion had not failed. Even when His people experienced discipline, He remained faithful to His nature and His promises.
This is an important truth for every believer. Sin is serious, and Scripture never encourages us to treat it lightly. Unrepentant sin brings guilt, sorrow, spiritual unrest, and painful consequences. But our failures are never greater than the mercy God provides to those who turn to Him in repentance and faith.
The hope of Lamentations ultimately points us toward Christ. At the cross, God did not ignore our sin. Jesus bore its judgment so that forgiveness could be offered freely to all who trust in Him. We do not receive mercy because we deserve another opportunity. We receive mercy because God is compassionate, faithful, and gracious.
Perhaps yesterday included failure, regret, or disobedience. The answer is not to hide from God or carry guilt as though Christ’s sacrifice were insufficient. Confess your sin, turn from it, and receive the cleansing He promises.
God’s mercies being new every morning does not make sin less serious. It makes His grace all the more precious.
When your failures seem great, remember that the faithfulness of God is greater still.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that Your compassion does not fail and that Your mercy is sufficient for me. Help me confess my sin, trust fully in Christ, and walk faithfully with You today. Amen.
