Devotion:

The Bible speaks plainly about the reality of life after death. Scripture uses different terms to describe the unseen realm and the final destiny of souls, but the central truth remains clear: death is not the end, and judgment is certain.

In the Old Testament, the word Sheol refers to the place of the dead—where both the righteous and the unrighteous departed. It was understood as the realm beyond this life. In the New Testament, the Greek term Hades is used in a similar way, describing the intermediate state where souls await final resurrection and judgment. Jesus Himself spoke of a division within this realm in Luke 16, describing comfort for the faithful and torment for the unrepentant, separated by a great chasm.

The New Testament also mentions Gehenna, which Jesus used to describe the final place of judgment—what Revelation calls the lake of fire. Unlike Hades, which is temporary, Gehenna represents the final and eternal separation from God. Even Hades itself will one day be cast into the lake of fire. There is also a reference to Tartarus, a place of confinement for certain fallen angels, awaiting judgment. These distinctions are not meant to confuse us but to show that God has revealed order, justice, and purpose in His plan.

Yet the most important truth is this: because of Christ’s death and resurrection, the destiny of believers has changed. Those who trust in Christ no longer await judgment in fear but are promised immediate presence with the Lord upon death. The grave does not hold the final word for the redeemed—Jesus does.

Scripture calls us not to speculation, but to readiness. Life is brief. Eternity is certain. And our response to Christ determines our destiny.

Prayer:

Lord, anchor my heart in the certainty of Your truth and help me to live each day prepared for eternity through faith in Christ. Amen.
