Devotion:

As Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He gave them assurance about prayer. He did not present prayer as a blank check for personal desires, but as a means through which God’s glory would be revealed. The promise, “whatever you ask in My name,” is anchored in a greater purpose—that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

To pray in Jesus’ name is more than attaching words at the end of a request. It is to pray in alignment with His character, His mission, and His will. Prayer becomes an act of surrender, not control. It is where the believer learns to bring desires before God while trusting Him to shape those desires according to His purposes.

Scripture teaches that God responds to prayers that reflect His will and honor His name. When our requests are driven by self-interest, they fall short of this purpose. But when our hearts are shaped by Christ, our prayers begin to reflect what pleases Him. In this way, prayer is not about persuading God to act according to our plans, but about yielding ourselves to His perfect plan.

The life of faith is marked by this quiet submission. We bring our needs honestly before God, yet we trust that He knows what is best. Even when answers differ from our expectations, we can be confident that God is working for His glory and our good.

Prayer, then, is both a privilege and a discipline. It draws us into fellowship with God and gradually aligns our hearts with His. As we learn to pray in this way, we grow in trust, humility, and obedience.

This is the kind of prayer that honors Christ and brings glory to the Father, just as Jesus intended.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to pray in a way that honors Your will and brings glory to Your name. Amen.
