The Seriousness of Sin
... We understand the greatness of Christ’s grace more clearly when we honestly recognize our need for His forgiveness.

Devotion:
Today’s Scripture reminds us that our greatest spiritual need begins with recognizing the true condition of the human heart.
It is easy to measure ourselves against other people and conclude that we are doing reasonably well. We may look at someone else’s failures and think, “I have never done that.” But Scripture does not measure righteousness by comparing one sinner with another. God measures us according to His own holiness, and by that standard, none of us is righteous.
Sin is not merely a collection of outward actions. Jesus taught that sinful behavior flows from within the heart. Anger, lust, pride, greed, deceit, and bitterness reveal something deeper than isolated mistakes. They reveal our need for a Savior.
This is why minimizing sin is spiritually dangerous. If we convince ourselves that the wound is small, we will never understand why we need the Great Physician. God’s Word speaks truthfully about our condition, not to drive us into despair, but to lead us to the One who can forgive and restore us.
The good news of the gospel is not that we can become righteous through greater effort. Our hope is Jesus Christ. He lived the righteous life we could never live, bore our sin on the cross, and offers forgiveness to everyone who comes to Him in faith.
The woman who came to Jesus in brokenness understood something the self-confident often miss. She knew she needed mercy. She did not defend herself or compare herself with others. She came to Christ, and He forgave her.
Grace becomes precious when we understand what we have been forgiven. The proper response is not shameful hiding, but humble faith in the Savior who receives sinners.
Remember today that seeing the seriousness of sin should always lead us to see more clearly the sufficiency of Christ.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, search my heart and keep me from minimizing my sin or comparing myself with others. Thank You for the forgiveness and righteousness You provide by grace through faith. Help me walk humbly before You. Amen.
