Devotion:

Luke tells us the purpose of this parable before Jesus even begins to speak: we ought always to pray and not lose heart. That simple instruction reveals something important. There will be moments when answers seem delayed, when circumstances remain unchanged, and when discouragement whispers that prayer is pointless. Jesus teaches this parable precisely because He knows our hearts.

In the story, a widow persistently appeals to an unjust judge for justice. The judge has no fear of God and no concern for people. Yet even he eventually responds because of her continual requests. Jesus is not comparing God to that judge; He is contrasting them. If an unrighteous man will finally act, how much more will a righteous and compassionate Father respond to His children?

Persistent prayer is not about wearing God down. It is about drawing near to Him again and again. Our Father is neither indifferent nor reluctant. He invites us to come boldly before Him. Yet His answers unfold according to His will, His timing, and His wisdom. Often we do not see the full picture. What we desire may not align with His perfect will. What we seek today may require preparation for tomorrow. What we ask for may be less than what He intends to give.

Prayer, then, is not an attempt to bend God’s will toward ours. It is the steady shaping of our hearts toward His. As we continue in prayer, faith deepens. We learn to trust His character even when we do not understand His ways. The persistence Jesus calls “faith” is not loud or dramatic; it is quiet confidence that God hears and will act rightly.

So we pray—not to persuade a reluctant Judge, but to commune with a loving Father. And we do not lose heart.

Prayer:

Father, teach us to persevere in prayer with trusting hearts, confident in Your perfect will and faithful love. Amen.
