God Our Refuge
... God becomes our refuge when fear drives us back to trusting Him
Psalms 56:3 NKJV (devotion translation)
Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.
Devotion:
David’s life entered a long and difficult season after he was anointed to become king. Instead of immediately stepping into the throne God had promised him, he spent years fleeing from Saul, hiding in caves, and living under constant threat. During one of those fearful moments, David made several rash decisions. He sought help in places he should not have gone and relied on his own reasoning instead of fully trusting the Lord. Yet even in his weakness, God remained faithful.
While hiding among the Philistines in Gath, David realized the danger he had placed himself in. Fear overtook him, and he pretended madness in order to escape. But afterward, David turned his heart back to the Lord. Out of that painful experience came words preserved for us in the Psalms: “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.” David did not deny his fear. He brought it honestly before God and learned again where true refuge is found.
Fear often exposes where we are placing our confidence. When life becomes uncertain, we can be tempted to rely on our own plans, our own strength, or whatever seems safest in the moment. But the Lord patiently teaches His children that lasting security is not found in human wisdom. It is found in Him alone. David discovered that caves, weapons, and strategies could not steady his heart the way God’s presence could.
The Lord did not abandon David because he stumbled. Instead, God used those hard years to shape him into a man who would depend more deeply upon Him. In the same way, the Lord often uses seasons of uncertainty to draw us closer to Himself. We may not always understand what He is doing, but we can trust His character. He is faithful, near to the brokenhearted, and attentive to the cries of His people.
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to trust You in every fearful moment and to rest in Your faithful care above all else. Amen.
