Guarding Your Walk With Christ
... The safest place for the believer is near enough to Christ that His voice becomes greater than every competing influence
2 Corinthians 6:14 NKJV (devotion translation)
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
Devotion:
Paul reminds believers that our relationship with Jesus must shape the deepest partnerships of our lives. The image of a yoke comes from farming, where two animals were bound together to move in the same direction and carry the same burden. If the animals were mismatched, the work became strained and unsteady. In the same way, spiritual unity matters because the direction of our lives is determined by what governs our hearts.
This passage does not call Christians to withdraw from unbelievers. Jesus Himself spent time with people who were far from God. We are called to love others, serve them, and point them to Christ through both our words and our conduct. But Paul warns against forming binding relationships where two people are moving according to different spiritual priorities. One life is centered on Christ, while the other is guided by the values of the world. Over time, that difference produces tension, compromise, and spiritual weariness.
God’s concern is not merely about outward relationships. His concern is the condition of our hearts and our devotion to Him. Paul says that believers are the temple of the living God. The Lord dwells within His people, and He calls us to walk in holiness because we belong to Him. The closer we walk with Christ, the more carefully we should guard influences that pull our hearts away from obedience and trust.
This passage is also a reminder that Jesus offers a better yoke. He invites us to walk closely with Him, to learn from Him, and to rest under His leadership. His way is not burdensome because He gives strength for what He calls us to do.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to guard my walk with You and to choose relationships that strengthen my faith and honor Your name. Teach me to walk closely with Christ each day. Amen.
