Hearing the Shepherd
... May we cultivate hearts that are quiet enough to hear and obedient enough to follow.
John 10:27 NKJV (devotion translation)
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
Devotion:
One of the questions many believers wrestle with is how to discern the voice of God. Scripture reminds us that the Lord is not silent. Jesus said that His sheep hear His voice, not because they possess extraordinary spiritual abilities, but because they belong to Him. A relationship with Christ creates the foundation for recognizing His leading. The more we walk with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes. This truth is reflected in the teaching from Acts 21 ↗, where Paul remained committed to following what he believed the Spirit had directed him to do, even when others expressed concern about the hardships that awaited him.
God primarily speaks through His Word. The Bible is His revealed truth, and He will never guide us in a way that contradicts what He has already spoken in Scripture. When we regularly read and meditate on God's Word, our minds are shaped by His truth and our hearts become more sensitive to His leading. His Word provides wisdom for both immediate decisions and future direction.
The Lord also uses the counsel of other believers. Wise and godly counsel can serve as confirmation of what God is doing in our lives. Yet our ultimate direction must come from the Lord Himself. He desires His children to know Him personally and to seek Him directly in prayer and obedience.
God often guides through His peace. When our hearts are surrendered to Him, His peace can help us discern whether we are moving in step with His will. This peace is not merely the absence of difficulty. Sometimes obedience leads through hardship, as it did for Paul. Rather, it is the settled assurance that Christ is with us as we follow Him.
The Lord frequently speaks in quiet ways. Like Elijah, we may discover that God's voice is heard most clearly when we slow down, listen, and give Him our full attention.
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to recognize Your voice through Your Word and to trust Your leading even when the path is difficult. Give me a heart that listens and obeys. Amen.
