Devotion:

The Bible presents a very different view of humanity than the one often embraced by the world. While many believe that people are basically good and simply need improvement, Scripture teaches that the problem runs much deeper. Sin has affected every human heart, and because of that, no one stands righteous before a holy God. This truth may be difficult to hear, but it is necessary because we cannot appreciate God's remedy until we understand our condition.

God has not left humanity without witness. His power and existence are evident in creation, and His Word reveals His character and His standards. Yet when people continually reject Him, they begin to exchange truth for falsehood and pursue their own desires apart from His design. The result is confusion, brokenness, and a life increasingly disconnected from the wisdom and goodness of God.

The encouraging truth is that God does not expose our sin in order to condemn us without hope. He reveals the reality of our condition so that we will recognize our need for a Savior. The same God who identifies the disease of sin has provided the cure through Jesus Christ. At the cross, God's justice and mercy met perfectly. There, Jesus bore the penalty we deserved so that all who trust in Him might receive forgiveness, reconciliation, and new life.

As believers, we should approach this truth with humility. We are not saved because we were better than others. We are saved by grace alone through faith in Christ alone. This keeps us dependent on God and compassionate toward those who have not yet come to know Him. Our calling is to hold firmly to God's truth while extending His love to a world that desperately needs both.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for revealing both the reality of my sin and the greatness of Your grace. Help me walk humbly before You and trust fully in Jesus, my Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

The Bad News and the Good News

  • Romans 1:18-32  - Humanity suppresses God's truth and turns from the Creator to created things.
  • Romans 2:1-16  - Moral people are also accountable before God and cannot claim righteousness on their own.
  • Romans 3:10-12  - No one is righteous before God; all have turned aside because of sin.
  • Romans 3:21-26  - After establishing universal guilt, God's remedy is presented - through faith in Jesus Christ.
