When Jesus Calls Your Name
... Jesus seeks the lost and transforms every heart that welcomes Him
Luke 19:10 NIV (devotion translation)
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
Devotion:
Zacchaeus was a man whose life appeared full. He held a powerful position as a chief tax collector and had accumulated great wealth. Yet beneath the surface of his success was a deeper emptiness. Though he could see with physical eyes, he did not yet see the truth about himself or about God. His life reflected the broken condition common to every human heart apart from Christ.
When Jesus passed through Jericho, Zacchaeus was curious enough to seek a glimpse of Him. Because he was unable to see over the crowd, he climbed a sycamore tree. What seemed like a small act of curiosity became the moment of divine encounter. Jesus stopped, looked up, and called him by name. In that moment, Zacchaeus discovered that the One he was trying to see had already come seeking him.
This is the heart of the gospel. Jesus did not come merely to teach or to inspire moral improvement. He came to seek and to save those who are lost. The initiative belongs to Him. Left to ourselves, we remain spiritually blind and separated from God. But Christ moves toward us with grace, calling us into restored fellowship.
The transformation in Zacchaeus was immediate and evident. When Jesus entered his home, repentance followed. Zacchaeus willingly gave away much of his wealth and restored what he had wrongfully taken. These actions were not a way to earn salvation but the fruit of a changed heart. When Christ enters a life, He reshapes desires, priorities, and relationships.
The story reminds us that no amount of success, wealth, or status can fill the emptiness of the human soul. Only Jesus can do that. He still seeks those who are lost, and He still calls people by name. When we respond to Him with humility and faith, He brings forgiveness, restoration, and new life.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, open my heart to Your saving grace and shape my life so that it reflects the transforming work of Your presence. Amen.
