Strength to Finish Well

... We finish well only by the strength that comes from walking closely with the Lord

Ephesians 6:10 NKJV (devotion translation)

Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

... prefferred translation (via Settings)

Devotion:

The life of Samson is a sober reminder that a person may be called by God and yet still suffer greatly through compromise. He was given unusual strength, but the deeper issue in his life was not outward power. It was the condition of his heart. Again and again, he moved toward what weakened his devotion to the Lord. What finally appeared in public had already been forming in private through smaller acts of disregard. Scripture teaches us here not to treat compromise lightly, because the heart rarely drifts all at once. It moves little by little when we stop fearing God and start trusting ourselves.

  • Judges 13 – The birth of Samson is foretold to his parents by an angel. He is set apart as a Nazirite.
  • Judges 14 – Samson’s marriage to a Philistine woman and the famous riddle at the wedding feast.
  • Judges 15 – Conflicts with the Philistines, including Samson killing 1,000 men with a donkey’s jawbone.
  • Judges 16 – The story of Delilah, Samson losing his strength when his hair is cut, his capture, and his final act of bringing down the Philistine temple.

This is why our strength must never be rooted in natural ability, past usefulness, or spiritual privilege. Samson had known the power of God, but there came a moment when he no longer recognized how far he had drifted. That is one of the most serious effects of sin. It blinds us to our true condition. We may think we are as strong as before, while inwardly we have grown careless, prayerless, and dull to the voice of God. The believer’s safety is not in self-assurance, but in daily dependence on the Lord.

Yet even in this warning, the mercy of God is not absent. The Lord does not preserve this account merely to show us failure, but to teach us wisdom. He calls us to repentance before compromise hardens us. He reminds us that real strength is found in fellowship with Him. What Samson neglected, we must guard: a life separated unto God, humble before His Word, and quick to repent when sin is exposed.

Christ is the One who kept Himself wholly obedient to the Father and never wavered. Our hope is not in our consistency, but in His faithfulness. As we abide in Him, He gives grace to resist temptation, to turn from small compromises, and to finish the race in the strength that He supplies.

Prayer:

Lord, keep me near You, strengthen me by Your Spirit, and help me walk faithfully without compromise. Amen.
