... God knows the heart and shapes it for His purposes

1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV (devotion translation)

When God chose David, it surprised everyone involved. Even those closest to him did not consider him a likely candidate. His youth, position, and outward appearance placed him low in the estimation of others. Yet God made His choice clear, not on the basis of what was visible, but on the basis of what was inward.

This reveals the consistent way God works. He is not guided by human standards or impressed by external qualities. The Lord sees with perfect clarity into the inner life of a person. He knows the thoughts, intentions, and desires that shape who we truly are. What may be hidden from others is fully known to Him.

David’s anointing also reminds us that God’s calling often unfolds over time. Though chosen as king, David returned to the fields and continued in ordinary responsibilities. In those unseen years, God was forming a heart that would trust Him, listen to Him, and depend on Him. The preparation was just as important as the calling itself.

In our own lives, it is easy to focus on how we are perceived or whether we are recognized. But God’s concern is deeper. He is shaping the heart in ways that may not be immediately visible but are essential for His purposes. Faithfulness in quiet places matters to Him.

Therefore, we are called to give attention to the condition of our hearts before God. When the heart is yielded to Him, we can trust that He sees, He knows, and He works according to His perfect wisdom and timing.

Lord, examine my heart and form in me a life that is faithful and pleasing to You. Amen.
