A Broken and Contrite Heart

... A heart that grieves over sin is a heart still being shaped by the grace of God

Psalms 51:17 NKJV (devotion translation)

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart, these, O God, You will not despise.

Devotion:

David’s sin against the Lord was grievous. He coveted, committed adultery, deceived, and arranged for the death of an innocent man. For many months he concealed his sin, but hidden sin never remains without consequence. It weighed heavily upon him, affecting both his heart and soul. Though David was king, he could not escape the conviction of God.

When the prophet Nathan confronted him, David did not defend himself or shift blame. He simply confessed, “I have sinned against the Lord” (2 Samuel 12:13). That response reveals why Scripture describes David as a man after God’s own heart. It was not because he lived a perfect life, but because he humbled himself quickly when convicted of sin. A repentant heart matters deeply to God.

The Lord forgave David, yet painful consequences still followed. Sin always leaves wounds behind. Even forgiven sin can affect families, relationships, and future decisions. This reminds us that God’s grace should never lead us to treat sin lightly. At the same time, we also see the mercy of God. The Lord did not abandon David. He restored fellowship with him and continued His purposes through him.

There is wisdom in responding quickly when the Holy Spirit convicts us. God often gives space for private repentance before matters become public and more damaging. Concealed sin brings sorrow, but confessed sin opens the door to healing and restoration. The safest place for a believer is honest repentance before the Lord.

Christ Himself made full atonement for our sin at the cross. Because of Him, we can come before God with confidence, not hiding our failures but confessing them, trusting in His mercy and cleansing grace.

Prayer:

Lord, give me a humble and repentant heart that responds quickly to Your conviction. Thank You for Your mercy through Jesus Christ and for the forgiveness You freely give. Amen.
