Obeying the Higher Authority
... A settled heart before God gives strength to stand firm before men
Acts 5:29 NKJV (devotion translation)
But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: ‘We ought to obey God rather than men.’
Devotion:
The early church quickly discovered that following Christ would require courage. After God healed a lame man through Peter and John, the religious leaders were not troubled by the miracle itself as much as they were by the message behind it. The apostles boldly proclaimed that Jesus alone is the Savior, and the authorities demanded that they stop speaking in His name. Yet Peter and John understood that silence would have meant disobedience to Christ.
Their response was simple and unwavering: “We ought to obey God rather than men.” This was not rebellion driven by pride or personal preference. It was submission to a higher authority. Jesus had commanded them to preach the gospel, and no earthly power had the right to forbid what God had required.
Scripture consistently teaches believers to respect governing authorities, pray for leaders, and live peaceably whenever possible. Yet there are moments when human commands directly oppose God’s truth. In those moments, faithfulness to Christ must remain supreme. The apostles understood that obedience to God could cost them freedom, reputation, or even life itself. Still, they chose faithfulness over safety.
The same test reaches believers in every generation. The pressure may not always come through imprisonment or persecution, but through compromise, silence, or fear of consequences. The question remains whether we will honor Christ above comfort, approval, or security. True obedience is often revealed when following Jesus becomes costly.
God does not call His people to reckless defiance, but to steadfast faithfulness. The courage of the early church did not come from human strength. It came from confidence that Jesus is Lord over every earthly authority and that His kingdom cannot be shaken.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to honor You above every earthly authority whenever truth and compromise stand opposed. Give me wisdom, humility, and courage to walk faithfully in obedienc
