... God’s guidance is received through humble dependence upon His Word and faithful obedience to what He reveals.

This passage reminds us that God does not leave His people without direction when they face important decisions.

Jeremiah spoke to Judah during a time of spiritual rebellion. God had repeatedly called His people away from idolatry and back to His ways. The “ancient paths” were not outdated traditions, but the trustworthy ways God had already revealed in His Word. Their greatest problem was not that God had failed to guide them. Their problem was that they refused to walk in the way He showed them.

The same principle matters whenever we come to a crossroads. Scripture first calls us to stand. There are times when wisdom means refusing to hurry. Waiting before the Lord is not wasted time. It gives us opportunity to pray, examine our motives, and resist decisions driven by fear, anger, or impatience.

We are also told to look. God’s providence is often seen in ordinary circumstances. We should carefully consider what He is doing around us without demanding some extraordinary sign before we obey.

Then we are told to ask for the good way. The believer does not ultimately look inward for truth. We turn to Scripture, where God has already revealed His character, His commands, and the wisdom necessary for faithful living. Our feelings may change, but the Word of God remains dependable.

Finally, we must walk in what God shows us. Biblical wisdom is meant to produce obedience. Knowing the right path while refusing to follow it cannot bring the rest Scripture describes.

That rest finds its fullest expression in Christ. Jesus calls the weary to come to Him and learn from Him. Peace is not found in controlling every outcome, but in walking closely with the One who faithfully leads His people.

When the path ahead is uncertain, remain near to God, listen to His Word, and obey what He has made clear.

Lord, keep me from rushing ahead of You. Give me wisdom from Your Word and a willing heart to walk faithfully in the way You show me. Amen.
