The Lord Is With You
... God’s calling is sustained not by your strength, but by His faithful presence
Judges 6:16 NKJV (devotion translation)
And the LORD said to him, ‘Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.’
Devotion:
Judges 6 opens with a hard but honest picture: Israel’s trouble did not come from God’s weakness, but from Israel’s wandering heart. The Lord had been faithful to them, yet they turned toward idols, and the consequence was oppression. When they finally cried out, God did not merely remove the pain; He addressed the deeper issue—calling His people back to Himself.
That is why the Lord meets Gideon in such an ordinary, fearful moment. Gideon is not standing on a battlefield; he is hiding while trying to provide for his family. And yet the Lord speaks to him with purpose. Gideon’s questions are questions many believers have asked: Why is this happening? How could God use me? How can I know what God wants?
God’s answer is not built on Gideon’s strength, status, or self-confidence. It rests on God’s presence: “Surely I will be with you.” The Lord does not deny Gideon’s weakness—He overcomes it with His faithfulness. Gideon plus God is enough, because God’s power is not limited by what we bring to the table. When God calls, He also supplies what is needed for obedience.
But notice the order in the story: before Gideon leads Israel publicly, he must deal with idolatry personally—starting close to home. God’s deliverance is often joined with God’s cleansing. He doesn’t only want to relieve our circumstances; He wants to reclaim our devotion. When we repent and turn from what competes with Him, we find that the Lord is not distant—He is present, patient, and ready to guide.
Prayer:
Lord, help me trust Your presence more than my limitations, and lead me to turn from anything that rivals Your place in my heart, Amen.
