... A life measured by God’s wisdom is richer than one measured by human years

Psalm 90:10 NKJV (devotion translation)

The Bible records that many people in the earliest generations lived for centuries. These extended lifespans remind us that human life, as originally experienced, was different from what we know today. Scripture presents a gradual shortening of human years, especially after the spread of sin and the unfolding of God’s purposes in history. Psalm 90 reflects this reality by acknowledging the brevity and frailty that now mark our earthly lives. Rather than focusing on the mechanics of longevity, the Bible directs our attention to the spiritual meaning of our limited time.

God, who is eternal and unchanging, measures our days with wisdom and intention. The reduction of human lifespan serves as a sober reminder that life in a fallen world is marked by weakness and dependency. Our strength is not found in how long we live, but in how faithfully we walk with the Lord during the years He grants us. Scripture consistently teaches that the true measure of life is not its duration but its devotion to God.

This perspective reshapes how we think about aging and purpose. Even as the body declines, the soul can grow in maturity, humility, and trust. The Lord calls His people to steward each day with reverence, seeking His will and resting in His grace. In Christ, we find the promise that life is not defined by earthly limits but by eternal hope. Our numbered days become an invitation to pursue wisdom, deepen our faith, and serve God with perseverance.

When we accept the boundaries God has set, we learn to live with greater clarity and gratitude. Each season becomes meaningful, not because of human achievement, but because of God’s sustaining presence. Our lives, whether long or short, find their true significance in Him.

Lord, teach me to number my days rightly and to live each one in faithful dependence on You. Amen.
