Devotion:

Throughout Scripture, God consistently calls His people to return to Him through repentance. This call is not merely about outward change but about a sincere turning of the heart. In the days of Joel, the people of Judah were facing impending judgment, yet God’s invitation was clear: return to Me fully, humbly, and sincerely. Repentance was the pathway to mercy.

Repentance matters because sin disrupts fellowship with God. Even among His people, there can be a drifting - a quiet hardening of the heart, a neglect of what is right, or a tolerance of what dishonors Him. God, in His mercy, does not ignore this. Instead, He calls His people back, not to condemn them, but to restore them.

The church must lead in this posture. Before renewal comes, there must be humility. Before restoration, there must be confession. Repentance is not a one-time act at salvation; it is a continual rhythm in the life of a believer. It keeps the heart tender, the conscience clear, and the relationship with God unhindered.

God’s character is revealed in this call - He is both holy and merciful. He takes sin seriously, yet He invites sinners to return. When His people respond with genuine repentance, they find not rejection, but grace.

This truth calls us to examine our own hearts. Where there is known sin, there should be honest confession. Where there is distance, there should be a deliberate return. As individuals and as the church, repentance prepares the way for God’s work among us.

Prayer:

Lord, give me a humble heart that quickly turns from sin and returns to You in sincerity; keep me faithful in repentance and close to You always. Amen.
