Devotion:

In John 9, Jesus encounters a man who had never seen light, color, or form. His condition was not the result of personal sin, as many assumed, but an opportunity for the works of God to be revealed. When Jesus healed him, the miracle went beyond restored sight; it led to a deeper revelation of who Christ is.

At first, the man simply knew Jesus as “the man called Jesus” (John 9:11). As questions and opposition increased, his understanding grew—he called Him a prophet (John 9:17), then one sent from God (John 9:33), and finally, he confessed faith in Him as Lord (John 9:38). This progression shows that spiritual sight often comes gradually, as God opens the heart to truth.

The contrast in the chapter is striking. The man who was physically blind comes to see clearly, while those who claimed spiritual insight remained blind. The Pharisees had knowledge of Scripture, yet they rejected the very One to whom it pointed. Their confidence in their own understanding kept them from receiving the light of Christ.

This reminds us that true sight is not merely intellectual awareness, but humble recognition of our need for God. Spiritual blindness is not always obvious; it can exist in those who assume they already see. But when a person comes honestly before Christ, acknowledging their need, He is faithful to open their eyes.

God may also use difficult circumstances in our lives to reveal His work more clearly. What we do not understand, He can use for His purposes. The question is not whether we fully grasp His ways, but whether we are willing to trust Him and follow where He leads.

Like the man in this passage, we are called to bear simple, faithful testimony: once blind, now seeing—because of Christ.

Prayer:

Lord, open the eyes of my heart to see You clearly and to trust Your work in every part of my life. Amen.
