The Patience of God

... God’s patience is a gracious opportunity to repent and walk again in faithful obedience to Christ.

Romans 2:4 NKJV (devotion translation)

Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

Devotion:

God’s patience should never be mistaken for God’s approval.

In 2 Kings 1 , King Ahaziah was injured after falling through the lattice of his upper room. Instead of seeking the Lord, he sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the false god of Ekron. Through Elijah, God confronted Ahaziah’s unbelief and announced that he would not recover.

Yet there is something important to notice in the account. God did not immediately bring judgment upon Ahaziah. He first sent His word. Ahaziah was confronted with truth and given time to respond.

This reveals something about the character of God. His patience is an expression of His mercy. Romans 2:4  teaches that God’s goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering are intended to lead us to repentance. When God exposes sin through His Word, His purpose is not merely to make us uncomfortable. He graciously calls us to turn from sin and return to Him.

The danger is that we can misunderstand His patience. Because judgment does not come immediately, we may assume that our sin is insignificant. But Scripture teaches the opposite. God’s patience gives us an opportunity to repent, not permission to continue in rebellion.

For the believer, repentance is not something confined to the beginning of the Christian life. We continually need the Lord to search our hearts, correct our thinking, and bring our lives into submission to His Word. Through Christ, we can confess our sins knowing that forgiveness has been secured by His sacrifice and that God receives those who come to Him in faith.

Consider today where God may be patiently correcting you through His Word. Do not resist His conviction or presume upon His patience. Receive His mercy by turning toward Him.

God’s patience is a gracious opportunity to repent and walk again in faithful obedience to Christ.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your patience and mercy toward me. Give me a humble heart that responds quickly to Your Word, confesses sin, and turns faithfully toward You through Christ. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

  • 2 Peter 3:9  - God’s patience gives opportunity for repentance rather than judgment.
  • 2 Peter 3:15  - God’s patience is an expression of His salvation and mercy.
  • 1 John 1:9  - Confession brings the assurance of God’s forgiveness and cleansing.

King Ahaziah’s Unbelief

Ahaziah was repeatedly confronted with God’s truth, yet he persisted in unbelief. The account illustrates that God’s patience provides an opportunity to repent, but His patience should never be mistaken for approval or an absence of judgment.

  • 2 Kings 1:2-4  - Ahaziah turns to Baal-Zebub instead of seeking the Lord, and Elijah announces God’s judgment.
  • 2 Kings 1:5-8  - Ahaziah’s messengers return and report Elijah’s warning, bringing God’s truth directly to the king.
  • 2 Kings 1:9-12  - Ahaziah repeatedly responds to God’s word with hostility rather than repentance.
  • 2 Kings 1:13-15  - A third captain humbly appeals to Elijah, and God shows mercy by sparing him and allowing Elijah to go to the king.
  • 2 Kings 1:16-17  - Elijah delivers the final word of judgment, and Ahaziah dies according to the word of the Lord.
