Honoring God Above All
... Christ’s authority is supreme, and faithful obedience to Him guides every other allegiance.
1 Peter 2:13-14 NKJV (devotion translation)
Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.
Devotion:
Today’s Scripture reminds us that God has established authority for His purposes, even when earthly leaders are imperfect.
God is a God of order, not confusion. Throughout Scripture He has established institutions to bring stability and blessing to human society. Civil government is one of those institutions. While governments are made up of imperfect people, their authority ultimately exists because God has allowed it. This truth calls believers to live as respectful and responsible citizens, honoring those in authority and obeying laws that do not conflict with God’s commands.
The apostle Paul wrote these truths while living under a government that was far from righteous. Yet he reminded believers that God remains sovereign over every ruler and every nation. Our confidence is never placed in human leaders but in the Lord who raises up kingdoms and removes them according to His perfect wisdom. Even when we do not understand His purposes, we can trust that He is never absent from the affairs of this world.
At the same time, Scripture also teaches that our highest allegiance belongs to God alone. When earthly authority commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, believers must obey the Lord above all else. Such obedience may come with hardship, but faithfulness to Christ has always required courage. The goal is never rebellion for its own sake, but humble obedience to the One whose authority is absolute.
As followers of Christ, we are called to demonstrate both respect for authority and unwavering devotion to God’s Word. In doing so, we bear witness that our hope rests not in governments, but in the eternal King whose kingdom will never pass away.
May your heart remain steady today, honoring rightful authority while keeping Christ firmly on the throne of your life.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your sovereign rule over every nation and every authority. Give me wisdom to honor those You have placed in authority while remaining faithful to Your Word above all else. Help me live as a faithful witness to Christ in every circumstance. Amen.
