The Whole Counsel of God
... A heart that welcomes the whole Word of God will be steadily shaped into the likeness of Christ.
Acts 20:27 NKJV (devotion translation)
For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.
Devotion:
As Paul met with the elders from Ephesus for what would likely be their final time together, he reflected on the ministry God had entrusted to him. Among the things he emphasized, one stood above the rest: he had faithfully taught them the whole counsel of God. He did not select only the comforting truths of Scripture while avoiding the challenging ones. He taught God's Word fully because he knew that spiritual health depends upon receiving all that God has spoken.
The Lord reveals His character throughout the entirety of Scripture. We learn of His love, mercy, and grace, but we also learn of His holiness, justice, and truth. When we embrace only the parts that comfort us, we gain an incomplete understanding of who God is. Yet when we humbly receive the whole counsel of His Word, we are strengthened, corrected, encouraged, and transformed.
God's Word is not given merely to inform us but to shape us. There are passages that bring deep reassurance to the weary heart. There are also passages that expose sin, call us to repentance, and direct us toward obedience. Both are expressions of God's love. A wise Father not only comforts His children, He also instructs them for their good.
The Christian life is not sustained by selective obedience but by a growing submission to all that God has revealed. As we open our Bibles each day, we should ask the Lord not only to show us what is pleasant to hear but also what we need to hear. The Spirit uses the truth of Scripture to mature believers and prepare them to stand firm in a world filled with confusion and compromise.
Prayer:
Lord, give me a humble and teachable heart that receives all of Your Word with faith and obedience. Help me to grow in the knowledge of Christ and to walk faithfully according to Your truth. Amen.
