None Righteous but Christ
... The same grace that exposes our need also provides our Savior in Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:23 NKJV (devotion translation)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Devotion:
Today's Scripture reminds us that God's assessment of the human heart differs greatly from the world's assessment.
Scripture teaches that humanity's greatest problem is not a lack of improvement, but the reality of sin. The world often assures us that people are basically good and simply need encouragement or refinement. Yet Romans presents a different picture. Every person, regardless of background, morality, or religious knowledge, stands guilty before a holy God. Paul makes it clear that whether one lives openly in unrighteousness, trusts in personal goodness, or takes pride in religious privilege, all have fallen short of God's standard.
This truth humbles us. It removes every basis for self-righteousness and comparison. We cannot measure ourselves against other people and conclude that we are acceptable before God. The Lord Himself is the standard, and His holiness exposes the true condition of our hearts.
Yet God has not left humanity without witness. He has revealed Himself through creation and has placed within each person a conscience that testifies to right and wrong. Even so, our conscience cannot save us. Like a mirror, it reveals our need but cannot cleanse us. The law of God likewise exposes sin but cannot remove it. Its purpose is to lead us to recognize our need for a Savior.
The good news of the gospel is that what we could never accomplish through our own efforts, God has accomplished through Jesus Christ. Salvation is not earned by human goodness. It is received by grace through faith in Christ, who bore our sin and satisfied God's righteous judgment on our behalf.
Remember throughout this day that humility before God is not a place of despair, but the doorway to grace.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for revealing the truth about my condition and for providing salvation through Jesus Christ. Guard me from self-righteousness and help me walk each day in humble dependence upon Your grace. Amen.
