Reconciled Through Grace

... Let the mercy God has shown you shape the way you respond to those who have wounded you.

2 Corinthians 5:18 NKJV (devotion translation)

Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Devotion:

The story of David and Absalom is a sobering reminder of what sin can do to relationships. What began as unaddressed wrongdoing eventually produced bitterness, division, and estrangement within a family. The pain was real, the wounds were deep, and the consequences were lasting. Yet within that difficult account, we see an important truth about the heart of God.

Human relationships are often marked by failure. We can be hurt by others, and we can also be the source of hurt ourselves. Left unattended, resentment can grow and harden the heart. Scripture repeatedly warns against allowing bitterness to take root because it affects not only our fellowship with others but also our walk with the Lord.

At the same time, the Bible reveals a God who seeks reconciliation. Unlike our tendency to withdraw, God moved toward us when we were separated from Him by sin. He did not leave us estranged. In His mercy, He provided the means for reconciliation through His Son, Jesus Christ. At the cross, justice was satisfied and grace was extended. Through faith in Christ, sinners are welcomed into fellowship with God and given peace with Him.

Because we have received such mercy, we are called to pursue peace with others whenever possible. Reconciliation is not always fully attainable, since it requires the response of another person as well. Yet believers are responsible to do their part, refusing to harbor bitterness and entrusting unresolved matters to the Lord. Life is brief, and every day is an opportunity to walk in obedience, humility, and forgiveness.

The gospel reminds us that God did not abandon us in our sin but lovingly made a way for us to come home to Him.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for reconciling me to Yourself through Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in forgiveness, pursue peace where I can, and reflect the grace You have shown to me. Amen.
