Devotion:

Paul stood before Governor Felix and Drusilla and spoke plainly about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come. Though Felix held political authority, he could not escape the authority of God over his life. When Paul reasoned about coming judgment, Felix became afraid and dismissed him, saying he would listen again at a more convenient time. Yet Scripture reminds us that the human heart is often willing to delay the very thing it needs most.

The Bible teaches that none of us are righteous before God in ourselves. Sin has affected every heart, and no amount of effort, morality, or religious activity can remove our guilt. God did not leave us without hope, however. In His mercy, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bear the punishment our sins deserved. Through faith in Him, sinners are forgiven and made righteous before God.

Paul also spoke about self-control because sin is not merely outward behavior, but the condition of the heart. Left unchecked, sinful desires rule our decisions and lead us away from God. The Holy Spirit works within believers to produce a life that is increasingly surrendered to Christ and shaped by obedience.

Felix trembled because he understood that judgment before God is unavoidable. Every person will stand before the Lord. For those who reject Christ, judgment leads to condemnation. For those who trust in Christ, judgment has already been satisfied at the cross. Jesus bore the wrath we deserved so that we might receive eternal life instead of eternal punishment.

There is a dangerous temptation to delay responding to God. Many assume there will always be another opportunity, another season, or another day. But Scripture continually calls us to respond while our hearts are able to hear His voice.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for sending Jesus to bear the judgment my sins deserved. Help me to walk humbly before You with a surrendered and obedient heart. Amen.

Digging Deeper:

  • Isaiah 55:6-7 - God's invitation is to seek Him while He may be found and turn from sin.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:2 - "Now is the day of salvation"; Scripture warns against delaying a response to God.
  • Romans 3:23-24 - All have sinned, yet justification is freely available through God's grace in Christ.
  • John 5:24 - Those who believe in Christ pass from death to life and escape condemnation.
  • Romans 8:1 - There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
  • Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 - God will bring every deed into judgment, reinforcing personal accountability before Him.

Felix Delays Responding to the Gospel

  • Acts 24:22 - Felix already had some knowledge of "the Way" (Christianity), so Paul's message was not entirely new to him.
  • Acts 24:23 - Rather than rendering a verdict, Felix kept Paul in custody but granted him certain freedoms.
  • Acts 24:24 - Felix hears Paul preach about faith in Christ, righteousness, self-control, and coming judgment.
  • Acts 24:25 - Convicted and fearful, Felix postpones his response.
  • Acts 24:26-27 - Felix continues to hear Paul over the next two years but never commits himself to Christ.
