The Presence of the Lord
... A home that welcomes the Lord through obedience, worship, and reverence will never lack His faithful care
Psalms 24:3-4 NKJV (devotion translation)
Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart.
Devotion:
When David first attempted to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, the effort ended in tragedy because God’s instructions were ignored. What seemed practical and efficient was not obedient. The Ark was placed on a cart instead of being carried in the manner God had prescribed. In the process, Uzzah touched the Ark and died. The moment reminded Israel that God is holy and must never be treated casually.
Afterward, the Ark remained in the home of Obed-Edom for three months. During that time, the Lord blessed his household. David then realized the people needed to approach God differently, with reverence, humility, and obedience. The priests sanctified themselves, the Ark was carried properly, sacrifices were offered, and worship filled the journey to Jerusalem.
This account reminds us that God’s presence is not something to acknowledge lightly. Though we do not possess the Ark of the Covenant, every believer lives before the Lord continually. He sees what takes place within our homes, hears our words, and knows the condition of our hearts. The question is not whether God is present, but whether we are living with an awareness of His presence.
David removed his royal robes and humbled himself before the Lord because he understood that earthly position means nothing before a holy God. The Lord is not impressed by status or appearance. He desires humble hearts that honor Him sincerely. Christ Himself demonstrated this humility perfectly. Though He is King over all, He came as a servant and gave Himself for sinners so we could draw near to God through grace.
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to walk before You with humility and reverence. May my heart, my words, and my home honor Your presence each day. Amen.
