Devotion:

The announcement of Jesus’ birth was not merely the celebration of a child, but the revelation of a Savior. When the angel instructed Joseph to name the child Jesus, it was because His very name means “The Lord saves.” From the beginning, heaven made clear why He came. He did not enter the world simply to inspire us, teach us, or improve us. He came to save us.

This verse quietly confronts a truth we often resist: we are sinners in need of rescue. Scripture does not describe humanity as slightly flawed or spiritually unbalanced. It speaks of sin as a condition that separates us from God and leaves us unable to restore ourselves. No amount of good intentions or moral effort can undo the guilt of sin. If we could save ourselves, there would have been no need for Bethlehem.

But God, in His mercy, provided what we could not. The child born in humility would grow to live a sinless life and willingly bear the penalty for our sin at the cross. Salvation is not achieved by our works; it is received by faith. The One laid in a manger would one day lay down His life. Grace was wrapped in swaddling clothes.

This is the heart of Christmas: God sent His Son to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. The question is not whether Jesus came to save, but whether we will trust Him as Savior. Faith is simply agreeing with God about our need and receiving His provision in Christ.

To know Jesus is to know forgiveness. To trust Him is to receive eternal life. The gift has been given; we are called to receive it.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to save us from our sins; help us to trust fully in Your finished work. Amen.
