Devotion:

Jesus declares Himself to be the light who has entered a dark world. This is not a statement about physical light, but about spiritual reality. Darkness in Scripture represents sin, confusion, and separation from God, while light speaks of truth, holiness, and the presence of God Himself. When Jesus came into the world, He revealed the character of God and exposed the true condition of the human heart.

The call of Christ is both an invitation and a warning. He invites people to believe in Him so they may come out of darkness and into the light. At the same time, He warns that remaining in darkness leads to spiritual blindness and separation from God. Light not only reveals the way forward, but also exposes what is hidden. For this reason, many resist it. Yet the very exposure that light brings is meant for redemption, not condemnation.

To believe in Christ is to step into the light—to acknowledge truth, to receive forgiveness, and to walk in a new direction. God does not leave a person unchanged. He brings clarity where there was confusion, purity where there was sin, and purpose where there was aimlessness. This transformation is not self-produced; it is the work of God in those who trust Him.

There is also a sense of urgency in Jesus’ words. The opportunity to walk in the light is not indefinite. Each person is responsible to respond while the light is present. To delay is to risk becoming accustomed to darkness.

Christ came so that no one would have to remain in darkness. In Him, God has made a way for people to know truth, walk in righteousness, and live in fellowship with Him.

Prayer:

Lord, lead me to walk in Your light, to believe Your truth, and to turn from all that belongs to darkness; Amen.
