... Anything that competes with our devotion to God must be surrendered to the lordship of Christ.

Jeremiah’s prayer comes in a chapter that exposes the foolishness of idolatry. The nations fashioned gods from wood and precious metals, then depended upon what their own hands had made. In contrast, Jeremiah declares that the Lord alone is the true and living God.

Idolatry, however, is not limited to carved images. The deeper problem is the human heart giving to something created the devotion that belongs to the Creator. A possession, relationship, career, pleasure, ambition, or even something good can become an idol when it begins to compete with our affection for God.

Jeremiah responds to this danger with humility: his life is not his own, and he cannot safely direct his own steps apart from God. That same posture belongs in the life of every believer. We belong to the Lord because Christ purchased us at the cost of His own blood. Therefore, our time, bodies, resources, desires, and plans are all to be surrendered to His lordship.

This also means we need God’s correction. Jeremiah did not merely recognize the idolatry around him. He asked God to correct him. That is the posture of a heart willing to be searched and changed by the Lord.

God’s discipline is not evidence that He has abandoned His children. His loving correction exposes what has begun to rule us so that we might repent and return to wholehearted devotion. Rather than resisting His correction, we should receive it with humility and ask Him to direct our steps according to His Word.

Consider quietly today whether anything has been receiving the affection, obedience, time, or trust that rightly belongs to God alone.

Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that has taken a place that belongs only to You. Direct my steps according to Your Word, and give me grace to receive Your correction with humility and surrender. Amen.
