A Life Prepared Before the Lord
... Prepare your heart before the Lord, knowing that quiet faithfulness is never overlooked by the One who sees all things.
2 Chronicles 27:6 NKJV (devotion translation)
So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God.
Devotion:
Today’s Scripture reminds us that God values faithful obedience more than outward appearance.
King Jotham’s reign receives only a brief account in Scripture, yet the Holy Spirit highlights what mattered most. His strength did not come merely from military success or wise leadership. It came because he carefully ordered his life before the Lord. His heart was set on obedience. While the people around him continued in corruption, Jotham remained faithful. His example reminds us that our walk with God is not determined by the choices of those around us, but by our own response to Him.
In contrast, the next king, Ahaz, repeatedly turned away from the Lord. Rather than seeking God in times of trouble, he trusted human solutions and false gods. His life illustrates the emptiness of relying on anything other than the Lord. Scripture consistently shows that true security is found in humble dependence upon God, not in our own wisdom or strength.
This same principle remains true for believers today. God is not looking for mere words of devotion while our hearts remain distant. He desires a genuine relationship that is demonstrated through daily obedience. Such obedience is not an attempt to earn His favor, but the grateful response of those who have received His grace through Jesus Christ. As we walk with Christ, the Holy Spirit shapes our desires and gives us strength to follow Him faithfully.
There will be seasons of uncertainty, temptation, and difficulty. In those moments, we are invited to cling to the Lord instead of our own understanding. He has not abandoned His people. Through Christ, God is Emmanuel, God with us, faithfully leading those who trust Him.
Prepare your heart before the Lord today, knowing that quiet faithfulness is never overlooked by the One who sees all things.
Prayer:
Father, teach me to walk in sincere obedience before You each day. Help me trust You instead of relying on my own strength, and shape my heart to follow Christ faithfully in every season. Amen.
