To Obey Is Better
... True worship is revealed through a life that obeys God completely
1 Samuel 15:22 NKJV (devotion translation)
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.
Devotion:
God measures faithfulness not by outward acts of devotion, but by a heart that responds to His word with obedience. In Scripture, the people of Israel were familiar with sacrifices as a form of worship. Yet the Lord made it clear that ritual without obedience is empty. He is not honored by offerings that are meant to compensate for a will that resists Him.
This reveals something essential about God’s character. He is not seeking performance, but surrender. He desires a relationship where His voice is trusted and followed. When obedience is partial or delayed, it is still disobedience, because it places human judgment above divine authority. The heart that chooses what to obey and what to ignore is not fully yielded to Him.
It is possible to maintain outward expressions of faith while inwardly resisting God’s instruction. This is a subtle danger. A person may speak of worship, engage in religious activity, and yet quietly justify areas of compromise. But God sees beyond actions; He examines the heart. He knows whether we are truly listening.
The call to obedience is not burdensome—it is protective and life-giving. God’s commands are not arbitrary; they reflect His wisdom and His desire for our good. When we obey Him, we walk in alignment with His will and experience the stability that comes from trusting Him fully.
Christ Himself is the perfect example of obedience. He submitted to the Father completely, even to the point of death on the cross. Through Him, we are not only forgiven but also empowered to live in obedience by the Spirit.
Today, consider where God has spoken clearly through His Word. The question is not whether we know what to do, but whether we are willing to do it.
Prayer:
Lord, give me a heart that listens and responds to Your word with full obedience, trusting that Your ways are right. Amen.
