Devotion:

In Ecclesiastes 5, Solomon turns from observing the burdens of life to addressing how we approach God. He reminds us that worship is not merely an outward activity but a matter of the heart. To “guard your steps” is to come before God with careful attention, recognizing His holiness and our position before Him.

The emphasis is not on external forms, but on inward reverence. God is not honored by empty words or careless expressions of devotion. Instead, He calls His people to draw near with a listening posture. This kind of listening is not passive; it is attentive and responsive. It reflects a heart that is ready to obey.

Solomon warns against what he calls the “sacrifice of fools”—words spoken without thought, promises made without intention to follow through. Such worship lacks sincerity and disregards the weight of God’s presence. The Lord is in heaven, sovereign and holy, and we are on earth, dependent and finite. This truth should shape the way we approach Him.

True worship, then, is marked by reverence, humility, and integrity. It is not confined to a moment or a place but flows from a life that seeks to honor God consistently. When we come before Him, whether privately or among others, we are to come thoughtfully, ready to confess, to give thanks, and to hear His Word.

This passage calls us to examine our approach to God. Are we hurried, distracted, or careless? Or do we come with a heart that recognizes His worth and responds accordingly? Worship that pleases God begins with a right view of Him and a sincere response from us.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to approach You with reverence and a listening heart, that my worship may be sincere and honoring to You. Amen.
