... Before asking God to show you the next step, consider whether your present steps are already being shaped by His Word.

Devotion:

This passage reminds us that discerning God’s will is closely connected to a life being transformed by Him.

We often want God to give us direction concerning important decisions. We ask where we should go, what we should do, or which path we should choose. Yet Romans 12 teaches us that discernment begins before the decision. It begins with surrender.

Paul first calls believers to present themselves to God as living sacrifices. Then he tells us not to be conformed to the thinking of this world, but to be transformed through the renewing of our minds. Only then does he speak about discerning the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. God is concerned not only with the direction we take, but also with the kind of people we are becoming as we follow Him.

A renewed mind comes through the truth of Scripture. As God’s Word dwells richly within us, we increasingly learn what pleases Him. The Bible may not name every particular decision we face, but it reveals God’s character, commands, priorities, and wisdom. These truths shape our judgment so that we can approach decisions with a mind increasingly governed by Christ.

This also means we should not expect God’s guidance while knowingly resisting what He has already revealed. His unknown will should never become an excuse for neglecting His known will. When Scripture has spoken clearly, obedience is not something to postpone while we wait for further direction.

And when we sincerely seek the Lord yet remain uncertain, we can remember His mercy. Our confidence is not in our ability to make every decision perfectly, but in the faithfulness of the God who leads His children.

Before asking God to show you the next step, consider whether your present steps are already being shaped by His Word.

Prayer:

Father, renew my mind through Your Word and teach me to walk in willing obedience. Give me wisdom to discern Your will and grace to follow where You lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
