Waiting in the Wilderness
... God often prepares His servants in seasons of waiting before fulfilling His promises
Psalms 40:1 NKJV (devotion translation)
I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry.
Devotion:
David spent many years living between God’s promise and its fulfillment. Though he had already been anointed to become king, he was still hiding in caves, fleeing from Saul, and enduring betrayal and uncertainty. The wilderness was not a detour from God’s plan—it was part of God’s preparation.
Again and again in those difficult years, David sought the Lord. When he did not know whether to stay or go, fight or flee, he inquired of God. Rather than trusting fear, pressure, or human opinion, he waited for the counsel of the Lord. The wilderness taught David dependence. God was shaping his heart long before placing a crown on his head.
Many believers know what it means to live in seasons of waiting. We pray, yet answers seem delayed. We hold to God’s promises, yet circumstances appear unchanged. In those moments, it is tempting to become discouraged or impatient. But Scripture reminds us that God is never inactive while we wait. He refines faith, deepens trust, and teaches us to rest in Him rather than in our own understanding.
David also discovered that the Lord Himself was his refuge. Though he hid among rocks and caves, he called God “my rock and my fortress.” Earthly security is temporary, but the presence of God remains steady and unshaken. In dry and weary seasons, the Lord becomes living water to the soul that seeks Him.
The wilderness may feel lonely, but God does some of His deepest work there. He teaches us to pray more sincerely, listen more carefully, and trust Him more fully. What feels like delay may actually be preparation for something greater than we can presently see.
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to trust You faithfully in seasons of waiting and to seek You as my refuge and strength each day. Amen.
