Faithful Unto Death
... A heart anchored in Christ can remain faithful even when the world stands against it
Acts 7:55 NKJV (devotion translation)
But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Devotion:
Stephen stood before the Jewish council accused, mocked, and condemned because of his faith in Jesus Christ. Yet in the midst of fierce opposition, his concern was not for his own safety but for the truth of the gospel. He carefully reminded his hearers of Israel’s history, showing that God had always been pointing His people toward the promised Messiah. The patriarchs, the prophets, and even the temple itself were never the source of salvation. They all pointed to a Person, Jesus Christ.
When Stephen spoke these truths, the crowd became enraged. Their hearts were convicted, but instead of humbling themselves before God, they hardened themselves against Him. Stephen, however, remained full of the Holy Spirit. Even while stones were thrown at him, his eyes were fixed on heaven. God gave him the grace to endure suffering with faith, courage, and mercy.
What stands out most is the spirit of forgiveness that flowed from Stephen’s heart. Like Jesus on the cross, Stephen prayed for those who were killing him. This kind of mercy does not come from human strength. It is the work of Christ within a surrendered life. The gospel not only prepares us to live faithfully, it prepares us to die faithfully.
Stephen also reminds us that death is not the end for the believer. As his earthly life was ending, he saw Jesus waiting to receive him into glory. The Lord whom he had trusted in life would also be with him in death. This is the confidence every believer may possess through faith in Christ.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to stand faithfully for Your truth with courage, humility, and grace. Teach me to forgive others as You have forgiven me, and keep my eyes fixed on Christ. Amen.
